BATAVIA, IL – Local Batavia resident and community activist Maura Hirschauer officially kicked off her candidacy for state representative in Illinois’ 49th District on Sunday, calling for safe neighborhoods, fiscal responsibility and middle-class values alongside supporters at the Peg Bond Center.

“Recently I have been thinking of the amazing, brave, young activists that have been making headlines in their attempts to get adults in the room to listen to their fears and ideas for change,” Hirschauer said. “Our children will change the world some day, but right now they need someone to look out for their futures and to hold down the fort for our youthful change makers. Today, I’m stepping up to be that someone.”

Hirschauer is a former elementary school teacher and previously worked with a volunteer program teaching English as a second language to adults and literacy to children. She currently serves as the president of the Batavia Mothers’ Club Foundation and is a founding member of the Kane and Kendall County chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. This is Hirschauer’s first run for public office. She entered the race for the 49th House District to succeed state Rep. Karina Villa, D-West Chicago, who recently announced her run for the Illinois State Senate.

“I’m running for state representative to keep moving forward with the positive changes that have been made in our state and to fight for a better quality of life for all people in our region,” Hirschauer said. “I will focus on the issues that our neighbors care about, like improving our public schools, being fiscally responsible for the economic health of our community, creating good-paying jobs, advocating for change in our health care system, and working to lower property taxes.”

“I’m thrilled to announce my support and endorsement for Maura Hirschauer’s campaign to continue putting hardworking families first and fighting for change in Springfield,” said Villa. “Maura is a compassionate and determined advocate who doesn’t sit back and wait for change to happen. She takes action and brings people together to enact real change. I have seen first hand how she worked with elected officials on the local, state and federal levels advocating for common sense gun reform and other issues impacting our community and I know she’ll bring that same passion to Springfield as our state representative.”

Hirschauer lives in Batavia with her husband Jim and their three children, Emma, Maggie and Teddy.
